04-Jul-17 Spartak Tournament Thank you

Spartak Tournament

Thank you to everyone who helped at the Spartak Tournament at Carver Barracks last Sunday - you were all brilliant and without you then we couldn't have put on this event !!!
We had 140 teams, almost 1000 young footballers from age 4 up to 16, they played 270 matches and I estimate there were around 2000 spectators, coaches, referees and volunteers at the event.
We opened the gates to the airfield at 7:30am and closed them again at 8pm. Never before have Spartak run such an event on this scale and it is testament to everyone's contribution that the event stayed on schedule, the finals were all played on time and we were able to clear up within an hour of the final presentation ceremony.
The referees were all excellent, several of them refereeing all day - special mention to one of our junior referees Robbie Draper who is 13 and did both sessions! All of the Spartak Youth and Saffron Walden Town Youth volunteers (parents, grandparents, friends) offered their time over a number of days to get the event setup and then again on the day itself. Another special mention to Dan Mullins who willingly helped Thursday through to Sunday.
Also some thanks to our event sponsors Global Markets Consultants (Prem Goyal) and Tom Walker Building Construction (Duxford) for your support and lastly to Pretloves Removals and Peak Construction for their help with transportation over the weekend.
Thank you again - I am sure all who played, coached and took part in the event really appreciate your collective contributions !! It was my pleasure to work alongside you all and deliver such a well planned and executed event. Yes there were a few hiccups during the day as this was a new venue however the "team" carried on regardless and delivered an excellent youth football tournament.

05-May-17 Cambs Colts League U12 Spartak U12 Blacks win 4-1

Spartak U12 Blacks 4 v 1 Chesteron Eagles

As the final whistle blew, on the last game of the season for Spartak U12 Blacks, the team reflected on a victory that saw them defeated only once in the League - with 17 wins and 1 defeat. They, rightly, finish as Champions with 51 points.
This game saw First take on Third place finishers, with the Leagues two top scorers playing for each side. Spartak had a point to prove; as the last time these teams met was a cup semi-final in March, with Chesterton coming out eventual winners in a closely contested game. Spartak started the brighter and were more eager in the attack. Persistant work from Jadon down the left flank, opened up Chestertons defence, to cross a fine ball through to Henry who fired in the first goal. Chesterton are second only to Spartak in goals scored this season, so were always going to be a threat. Towards the end of the first half, they broke through a resolute Spartak back line to level the score.
The breadth of attacking options, available to Spartak, came to the fore in the second half. The team, eager to finish the season with a flurry, were soon on top with goals for Rudi and Aaron. A strong defensive line alternating between Jamie, Sam, Oliver, Theo and Samson blunted the Chesterton attack, reducing them to the occasional long-range effort. The game was sealed in the final, few moments with a superb, long-range, precision shot from Henry to make the final score 4-1.
Spartak U12 Blacks are already planning for promotion and continued success next season. Players interested in joining should contact davidbainbridge@spartak78.com .

02-Apr-17 Cambs Colts League U12 Spartak U12 Blacks Win their League

Spartak U12 Blacks Cambs Colts U12 Albion Division Winners

Saturday 1st April saw Spartak Saffron Walden U12 Blacks produce their 16th consecutive league win of the season; maintaining their 100% win rate and, with it, the League title - two games still remaining. A nervous first half saw goals, from Aaron and Jadon, at key times to take a 2-1 lead. The second half produced some fine attacking football - with Sam dominating the middle of the pitch, Henry getting a brace and Jadon completing his hat-trick. Spartak eventually running out 6-2 winners. The game also saw them score their 100th goal of the season !

05-Apr-14 Memorial Match Josh Bysouth Cup

Aztecs win Josh Bysouth Cup

At the weekend Spartak 78s U15 team and Aztecs Juniors U15 team met to play the Josh Bysouth Remembrance Match to honour Josh who was lost back in 2011 along with his grandfather, Michael Kidd. Contesting the Josh Bysouth Cup, the boys put on an excellent display of football in a match that was played both keenly and with excellent spirit and sportmanship. Spartak, having taken the lead through Charlie Cotier mid-way through the first half, were then on the receiving end as 2 goals from Callum Hayes and another from Luke Wood gave Aztecs the lead at 1-3. Aiden Byrne pulled a goal back for Spartak late on for 2-3, but there wasnt time for the equalizer and Aztecs ran out winners of the trophy. Spartak would like to thank sincerely all the boys and parents of both teams, and the officials at Aztecs Juniors for coming over to contest the cup, and for all their support in making the match happen. The trophy will remain on display in the Herberts Farm pavilion, carrying the green/black colours of Aztecs Juniors, until the cup is contested once more next season. Spartak also thank the referee, John Russell, and the assistant referees Robert Chappell and Adam OSullivan, for officiating, and the supporters who took the trouble to come and cheer the boys on.

12-May-12 Cambs Mini League U9 Spartak win thriller at Catons Lane

Saffron Walden Town U9 Blue 4 v 9 Spartak 78 U9 Blacks

Expectations were high as two undefeated records were at stake as Saffron Walden Town hosted Spartak 78 at Catons Lane in Cambs Mini League U9B. It was Spartak who claimed the honours for this season as goals from Aiden Stoten (5), Charley Stark (3) and Robert Richardson secured a thrilling 9 4 win against their local rivals.

The match kicked off under welcome blue skies and Spartak got the best possible start as Stark scored with a tap in after 10 seconds. Good teamwork from the Spartak team created a constant supply of chances for their strikers to score some excellent goals and some determined and organised defending by Spartak ensured they always remained in front. They finished the game in style as a goal-line clearance by Aidan McErlain setup Richardson to run down the wing and with a perfect strike he hit the top of the Walden net.

Spartak Manager Andy Stoten was full of praise for all his players and particularly for stand-in keeper McErlain whose excellent performance kept the scores even in the early stages. He said afterwards It was a great match and Saffron Walden were tough opponents with an impressive goal-scoring record, credit to them and their manager and coach. Well done to the Spartak boys and to their coach Adam Purkiss. Click link for match report.

22-Apr-12 Cambs Colts League U17 Spartak U17s heartbreak in KO Cup Semi-Final

Spartak 78 4 v 4 Aztecs (aet, Aztecs win 3-1 on pens)

High drama at Herberts Farm on Sunday 21st April in the U17s KO Cup Semi-Final as Spartak took the lead 4 times but each time Aztecs pegged them back and with the scores level ater extra time the tie was eventually decided by penalties, with Aztecs coming through and progressing into next months final. It look like Spartak had done enough to win the game however a cruel equaliser from Aztecs one minute from the end of normal time took the game into extra time. Click link for match report.

Dear Keith
Please will you kindly pass onto all the parents who assisted with such a successful day on Wednesday, the feedback from Schools has been superb. It is only because of your great efforts, time and commitment that it was such a success. Please can you kindly pass on my personal thanks to all your committee and parents who assisted throughout the day as you could see the partnership could not have achieved such an excellent event without your support.

Spartak 78 U11s try out Paralympic sport
with help from Sainsbury's.

The players of the Spartak 78 U11 team held their Christmas party in Widdington Village Hall on Saturday 7th January and tried out 2 paralympic sports "Blind Football" and "Sitting Volleyball". Manager Claire Rees-Jones signed up to the Sainsbury's 1 million kids challenge and received a pack containing the necessary equipment and instructions to enable Claire to setup the games. After a warm-up session the boys played a series of paralympic games over 60 minutes and before getting stuck into the party food they were challenged by their parents to play "Goalball" and the boys won 3 games to 1. After the party a collection was made from the boys parents and this allowed Claire to pass over a cheque for 88.03 to local charity Support 4 Sight, supporting visually impaired people. 20-Sep-11 Spartak 78 U14 Joshua Bysouth

In remembrance of Josh Bysouth

At Spartak we are all totally devastated by the tragic loss of Josh Bysouth and his Grandfather, Michael Kidd, and it is difficult to put into words the pain we all feel. Josh, who played for the current Spartak U14 youth football team, was such a lovely child, always smiling, always good natured and polite and totally comfortable in speaking with adults and he also was a role model for the younger players of the club to look up to. Though only 13 years old Josh was a tall boy at around 6 feet, and while an authoritative figure on the pitch he was kind and gentle off it. He had been at Spartak since he was 5 years old and at the start of this season been given the captaincy role. Indeed, only on Saturday he had gone into a local sports shop to get a captains armband to wear, and the next morning he had captained his side and received the man of the match award from his coach, Adam OSullivan. He was proud and loyal to his club and we will all miss Josh so much.

We thank everybody for all their messages of kindness and feel proud of the footballing community, which has come together to remember Josh and to grieve with us all. Our thoughts are with Joshs family and close friends, particularly his parents who have lost a son and a father, and Joshs grandmother who has lost a husband and a grandchild.

14-Jun-11 Spartak Tournament Mini Tournament Report

Spartak 78 Mini League Tournament & Football Fun Day Report

On Saturday June 11th Spartak 78 YSC hosted their 8th Annual Mini League Tournament and Football Fun Day at the Herberts Farm playing fields in Saffron Walden. Thankfully the overnight rain eventually cleared prior to the start of the event and much of the football was played in bright sunshine. There were a total of 36 teams from ages U6 to U10 playing mini football, with many local teams attending, Plantation Youth and Saffron Walden Town and also teams from further afield such as Huntingdon and Ely and also several teams from Suffolk.
The standard of football was particularly high across all age groups and the enthusiastic supporters were royally entertained as a total of 90 matches were played. The competition in the U10s group was particularly close and all 7 teams could have qualified for the knockout stage had the final matches turned out differently. The U10s semi-finals saw Spartak 78 Reds overcome Plantation Panthers 2-1 with 2 late goals and Sutton Rangers defeat Plantation Pumas after extra time. In the final Spartak eventually ran out winners 3-0 against Sutton to maintain their fine recent run of form (photo). In the U9s semi-finals Cambridge Celts overcame Saffron Walden 2-1 and Plantation Pumas won via a penalty shoot-out with Haverhill Rovers. A closely fought final eventually saw the Pumas win 2-1 and thus all this years trophies went to Herberts Farm based teams(photo). In the younger age groups the matches were equally as competitive and the cheers echoed around Herberts Farm as and when goals were scored.
Spartak would like to give their sincerest thanks to all of the referees who very kindly gave up their time, to all of the volunteers (Spartak parents, friends and officials) who helped out with the event, to all of the sponsors who helped to support the event and finally to all of the teams who came along to participate and make it such a successful event. Also Spartak were particularly grateful to the Town Mayor and Mayoress of Saffron Walden for coming along and presenting the medals and trophies. We really do appreciate everyones support and wish all of the clubs good luck for next season and look forward to seeing you again soon.
Finally we would like to take this opportunity to thank our primary event sponsors :-
Global Markets Consultants (Mr Prem Goyal of GMC),
Trident Building Consultancy,
PHI Partners and
Spier Consulting

for their most generous support of the event and especially GMC team members Monika, Hafsa and Nitin who volunteered their time and effort on the day to help things go smoothly, particularly for their "mammoth" stint working on the BBQ which was very much appreciated!

03-Jun-11 Spartak Tournament Colts Tournament Report

Spartak 78 Colts Tournament Report

The weekend of 21st and 22nd May saw Spartak 78 YSC host their first 9 v 9 and 11-a-side football tournament, and were grateful for a fine bout of weather, if rather windy at times. In total, around 60 matches took place over the 2-day event as 29 teams from the age groups U11 to U16, and from no fewer than 19 clubs from as far a field as Ipswich and Ramsey, contested the event.
All of Spartaks friends and local rival clubs from Saffron Walden were represented at the event, namely Plantation YFC, Saffron Walden Town FC and Walden Wanderers. Saffron Walden left the tournament very happy having picked up a trophy at the U11 age group with a 1-0 win over Balsham in their final (Photo), and another at U14 after beating Fulbourn Falcons 2-0 in the final. Plantation finished runners up at U13 with another local side, Sawston United, taking the title in a 5-1 thriller. Spartaks U12s walked away winners at their age group after a 1-0 victory over Haverhill in the final (Photo).
The older age groups were settled by teams from further a field. Chesterton Villa triumphed over Hundon Hawks at U16 in a penalty shoot out after extra time failed to settle the tie which had ended in a goalless draw. At U15, Ramsey Colts were pleased to have made their long journey as they walked away 1-0 winners over Spartaks U15 Reds in a closely contested final.
Spartak would like to give their sincerest thanks to Senior Referee Dudley Haylock who generously provided his refereeing services for free, putting in an outstanding 11 hour shift on the Saturday and a further 6 hours on the Sunday many thanks Dudley. The club would also like to thank the local businesses who sponsored the tournament programme, and all those officials and parents within Spartak who gave up their time, be it refereeing, staffing the catering facilities, assembling and dismantling the facilities etc. Finally, Spartak would like to thank all of the teams who came from near and far to participate and make the event a success. Your support is much appreciated and we wish you all a great season for 2011/2012 and hope to see you all again at next years event.

12-Feb-11 Spartak 78 U10 Brad's 100th goal for Spartak

Congratulations Brad Manning 100 goals for Spartak 78

He may only be 9 years old but Brad Manning has just notched his 100th goal for Spartak 78 following his hat-trick against Saffron Walden Town at Catons Lane on Saturday 12th Feb. Brad joined Spartak 4 years ago and during that period he has played 58 league games, 3 KO Cup matches and now scored a total of 102 league and cup goals, including 30 goals so far this season (that's 5 hat-tricks in total for 2010/11) with the prospect of more to come. Playing up front or on the wing, Brad scores regularly from long range shooting, with headers and also his quick thinking and deft footwork makes him particularly lethal anywhere inside the penalty area.
